There is a great emphasis on health in modern times. People stay at the gym and are very careful of what they eat. I constantly hear, "I can't eat 'x,' its not healthy," or "I am trying to lose 'x' number of pounds." While everyone is so focused on what to eat for their next meal, what about the text you are eating and feeding others? In the book of Revelation, John was told to eat a scroll. So he ate it. He was also informed that after eating it, it would make his stomach bitter but would taste like honey in his mouth.
Stop and think for a minute about what is happening... he is told to eat a scroll/book which is the word of God. Not literally eating the scroll but digesting (discerning) what is read.
Now think about how you feel when you hear or read something unpleasant. Depending on what it is, it could make you sick to the stomach. This is the bitterness that John felt after eating (reading) the book. Maybe the bitterness he felt was the realization (revelation) that his sins caused the downfall of many (one body many members). But then, unlike the flesh (which is subjected to death), the spirit helped him discern the goodness that would follow through his belief and obedience to the word (the honey).
This being said, take a moment and think about what you feed to your soul on any given day. Social media, news, books, how are these mediums feeding your soul and others? When you feel that bitterness in your stomach does it come with an aftertaste of honey or acid? Point is, be careful of what you read, because it is your food and if digested, is shared with many (one body many members). The best taste comes from the word of God. This bitterness is very pleasant because it means conviction and the sweetness is the taste of salvation. He wants you to taste the honey too.
This in mind read the following scriptures;
- John eating the scroll-- Revelation 10;9-10
-The word better than honey-- Psalm 119:101-103
- Ones bitterness defiles many-- Hebrews 12:15
For the wages of sin is death but the gift of God is eternal life. Ask the Holy Spirit for a discernment before you read the scriptures, and just as he did for John, he will do the same for you. All it takes is belief and faith. Give God your time, put on The Word of life.
